Here you will find useful links to resources to support your individual career journey. You may identify with one or several of these headings. Exploring these resources may be useful in preparation for a ‘Get Ahead’ appointment you have coming up or for your independent career development. The lists do not cover all the opportunities out there, so we welcome suggestions via the Let us Know button.

Sharing information with employers

Many students and graduates with a disability, health condition or neurodiversity worry about how (or whether) to tell employers about it as part of the recruitment process or when they’re in work. Legally, this is called ‘disclosure’. You may feel concerned that employers will be biased against you or treat you differently.

You are under no obligation to inform an employer about your disability. Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal for employers to ask about health and disability when recruiting staff. However, it’s really important to note that it can be in your best interest to tell prospective or present employers about your disability, so that adjustments can be made for you. If you’re worried about this balancing act, have a look at the information on Target Jobs for further advice and book a Get Ahead appointment to have a confidential chat with a member of the Careers team. You could also have a look at this useful Guide to Telling People you’re disabled for students by Disability Rights UK – this covers really helpful topics such as describing your disability positively, and when is the best time to disclose.
